Introduction
The big challenge for the company SFS Simulation was to design a reliable wireless system for the Smart Cone Challenge. The Smart Cone Challenge is a dynamically responsive test, which involves a system of randomly lighted gates that test a driver's skill and response times. The set of cones had to be controlled dynamically, reliably with minimal latency and working on batteries.
Solution
The solution consists of a set of cones equipped with signaling lights and IQRF wireless communication. There are usually about 30 cones in the network that light up according to the chosen scenario. Test scenarios can be customized by the customer. More information about the Smart Cone Challenge. The Smartcone system is based on the IQRF wireless mesh network, uses Inertial GPS Navigation, custom HW and SW to record a driver's performance.
Conclusion
The Smartcone system has been very successful, and now have 24 sets in heavy use all over the world. World-famous car producers use this system to promote their cars, where people can try out the car features just by undergoing this test.
Only two nodes failed in service, and only because they were destroyed by vehicles.
Smart cones can be controlled dynamically and reliably with minimal latency thanks to wireless reliable IQRF communication. Transceivers in IQRF cones are powered by a battery and the firmware can be upgraded through an OTA update.
